A Designer's Quest

Elance.com

I have been a subscriber to Elance.com off and on since 2004. I left Elance for a time while a pursued other things but have recently come back in an effort to restart my freelance service I run on the side.

I must say that that I have had a difficult time winning bids this time around. It has only been a couple of weeks but the competition is very stiff and it seems I can't seem to get anyone to "take a chance" on me after a couple of years. I have a perfect 100% rating from my older customers but still no luck. I guess I have not found that sweet spot where my price, sales verbiage and profile catches anyones attention. I am still searching for that magical combo but until then...I'm getting nada!

I would love to hear anyone else's experience with these types of sites. If I get enough feedback, I will put together a "winning" bid document that will help others be more successful and share it here.

My one hint that I know is true...being the cheapest bid does not always translate into a winning bid.

I actually on rare occassions after I feel I am a little bit better of designer than before the last time visit www.99designs.com and try my luck there. Must be sure to know the rules there such as nothing stock can be used unless otherwise requested. That site is not like a elance though. Its only for designs and each project holds contest. Everybody does the work and the CH picks a winner and they get paid. Really cool site that Chris (Admin here) told me about. If you have the patience and skill level a lot of money can be made on this site.

I dont have either..lol. Working on it though.. Getting better everyday. Haven't won any contest yet. I've only achieved 3 out of 5 star ratings on my submissions so far but getting 3 stars on that site means your pretty decent. Ratings are rough. Ill check back in once I try it again.

I checked the site out...that looks really cool. I will have to give it a try. Seems like a great way to build up my portfolio of work if nothing else.

Quick update...I won a bid on Elance!!! It's a small job creating a 12 page ebook for a customer in Australia. The project includes the ebook cover as well as the type setting. Wish me luck!
