Alot of times people ask "What software do you use". My answer is simple, I use 4 different programs to achieve the final graphic I make. These programs are: Jasc Paint Shop Pro v9 w/Animation3, CorelDraw3D,The Logo Creator and once in awhile I use Adobe Illustrator...not that often tho.
Now before you go out and purchase ANY of the programs, May I suggest you download a trial version and really play with it to where if you decide you really can get to learn it,You will not be dissapointed that you have spent the money for it. I find alot of times people dive right in and buy some software they think is going to contain the perverbial 1 step Magic Solution and then to find out it doesnt. If your not a reader, Dont waste your time. Because more than not, somewhere your going to have to read to figure out how a process you want to do is done!. Heres a tip! instead of creating a graphic, take one you already have and mess it up while learning the program of your desire. As long as you dont save it as the "Original" file you wont hurt the graphic at all. Next...do one thing at a time, remember the steps you did, then repeat it so you know what to do and what it does when you do it. Take a look at the "HELP" file and look at the tool bar, If you hold your mouse cursor over each item, It will tell you in a small window what that tool is. Dont ever expect the "Instant Success" button will be there, because I havent found one yet. But if you are after great graphics and awesome logos, Then its up to you to learn what program can do what when you need it and when you want it and what you really want it to accomplish.

I remember back in 1996, a friend gave me a copy of his windows 95a cd.
At the time I was using win 3.11 with workgroups, I remember how excited I was to install this new operating system on my computer, I really didnt know why I was excited...Maybe it was because It was a "new toy" to play with. Well after alot of time that passed, Windows 95 was Installed. The computer rebooted, And I was sitting there with the greatest anticipation one could have wanting to see what was going to happen next. Kinda like watching a really good movie. And when it did load completely. I was in awe! Just look at all this new stuff I get to play with ( more like mess up actually ). Everything looked so....so....well alien to me at first. But one other thing was now evident to me...The WWW was not going to be the same now, And it wasnt...The one thing I saw that blew my mind was the gifs I looked up and saw this amazing looking picture come to life. I bet I stared at the mouse jumping over that candle for 2 hours, thinking "MAN whoever did this was a genius...I gotta learn how to make something like that!, And this is what got me started in making what I do now. Except they are not animated...Strange huh?
I hope I've learned well, I hope I learn still, And I hope my work is appreciated and admired by those who see it, use it and they too get a spark by it to create :)

I've always had the 'entrepreneurial' spirit.

I remember, being 9 years old, going down to the local pottery shop and buying a dozen un-kilned coffee mugs. I drew cartoons on them (I was a wanna-be cartoonist back in the day) and brought them back to the pottery shop to have them Kilned (baked).

I then took them to the local fire department and my school and tried to sell them. I did sell a few of them ... but I never made enough to compensate for the cost of the cups, kilning and paints! :D

This is the SAME problem I have with the retail world. I've been selling The Logo Creator in large retail stores like CompUSA, Fry's Electronics and Office Max since 2004.

Each box will cost (roughly) $3.00 (USDollars) to design. This includes the actual box, the CD inside, the sleeve the CD is put into, burning the CD and putting in the cardboard to make the box thicker.

A designer may charge upwards of $2,000 to $7,000 to design the box! (I'm lucky enough to be able to design my own boxes). A good rule of thumb is to spend $3,000 for 1000 boxes.

Most times, 1,000 is the smallest amount you'll be able to print. This can really add up when a large chain (Office Depot for instance has 1200 stores nation wide). Each store may want a minimum of 5 boxes on the shelf. That's 6,000 boxes. At $3 a pop!).
:dhuh:

Once the boxes are manufactured, there is "Shelf Space" to deal with.
Not all ... but some stores don't just take a product and put it onto their shelves. They need cash.

They always need cash.

Sometimes, shelf space can go as high as $5,000 for one product! You need to sell a boat load of software to make up this 5k.

Then, the retail chain takes it's cut. Sometimes up to 10%
...It can all get a bit nutts.

This is why the internet is so terrific. NO overhead other than your time. (I do use DigitalRiver.com for my eCommerce and shopping cart system. They take 20% of my monthly sales. ...WELL worth it I must say. I'll write more about DigitalRiver in a future post).

This is the beauty of downloadable software (or anything you can create once and have others purchase multiple times. An eBook for example).

Retail used to be king, but I'll put my money into Net any time.

It's harder to market yourself online since there's a ton of competition, but that's where SEO and SEM come in (Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing). A great topic for a future post :D
